Notes for Frederick Moses PENNOCK

Frederick Moses (F.M.)Pennock moved to Puerto Rico in 1899 to start a new life. A horticulture graduate of Cornell University, F.M. was the pioneer in citrus production on the island and started a large grapefruit industry that was to be exported to the North Eastern US market.

In 1906 Mr. Frederick M. Pennock of Kennett Square Pennsylvania founded a company called North South Nursery Co. (Pennock Gardens). This company was dedicated to the production of citrus and cut flowers for local consumption and export. For the next 99 years, the ornamental plant business in Puerto Rico has evolved into a 40+ million dollar industry. In one respect or another, a direct descendant of F. M. Pennock has been an integral part of the island's ornamental plant industry. His son Charles, grandson Charles Jr. and for the past thirty-three years, his great grandson Douglas.
On February 19, 1998 a new chapter in the ornamental plant industry of Puerto Rico began when Pennock Growers, Inc. was incorporated. Mr. Douglas W. Pennock launched what he believes is Puerto Rico's premier ornamental plant nursery. The nursery is located on a 238-acre tract of land located in the municipality of Humacao on the east coast of Puerto Rico.
