Notes for Joseph TATNALL
Joseph Tatnall, (1740-1813), was a quaker who could not take up arms but was known for his patriotism. He contributed flour for the subsistence of the famishing army and Washington was his guest before the battle of Brandywine. At his home in Market street, Washington and Lafayette dined and it was the headquarters of Wayne when in Wilmington. When the Bank Of Delaware was organized in 1795 he was chosen first President; and upon the erection of Wilmington's town hall in 1798, he presented the tower clock, still in use, and also gave a large bell to the town.
