His rule as Duke of Normandy began at age eight. He was crowned on Christmas Day 1066 after a battle against Harold, Earl of Wessex, on 14 October 1066, for the Kingdom. William was killed during a raid when his horse stumbled and the pommel gored his abdomen. He died three weeks later.
